Starting in December 2005, I began the process of preserving my grandmother’s home movies for use in a future project. Starting in August 2006, several posts on this site chronicle this process. If you’ve missed any of the posts, you can find them here by clicking on the link:
Home Movie Preservation Part I -A comparison of various post-production houses for transferring home movies to DVD and miniDV.
Home Movie Preservation Part II -A discussion of the pros and cons of my film transfer at Home Movie Depot.
Home Movie Day -A synopsis of the events of Home Movie Day in Richmond, VA, including links to various resources for film preservation.
Home Movie Preservation Part III -Screenshots and a description of the simple database I created to organize my home movie collection.
For Memories’ Sake - A half-hour documentary film that details, in part, the process of discovering and preserving my grandmother’s home movie collection.

Thanks for posting your experience. I just sent off thousands of feet of film to Home Movie Depot dating from the 30’s to the 70’s, from France to Boston. I found the same thing in my research - their quality wasn’t as good but much more affordable. Keeping my fingers crossed that they do as well by me as they did for you. Once I get it all back it’s lots of time in front of FCP for me. Again, great site.
